For example, one article noted that multiple journals “appear to be affected by a citation cartel between a group of researchers across three universities, via the medium of special issues.”

In another report, the blog Retraction Watch described how a single editor of Land Degradation & Development allegedly coerced authors into citing his journal, thereby creating a cartel-like behaviour.

Metrics such as impact factors and author h-indexes get inflated unfairly.

The integrity of the citation network is compromised: real scientific influence is blurred.
